At the online conference “Environmental Risk Assessment of Biocides” in late March, DR. BRILL INSTITUTES Heike Schimmelpfennig, Dr. Brill Regulatory Services GmbH, and Bernd Daehne, Dr. Brill + Partner GmbH Institut für Antifouling und Biokorrosion, will be among the speakers. Heike Schimmelpfennig will speak on the topic “Comparison of Environmental Risk Assessments across different legislative areas”, Bernd Daehne's presentation title is “Non-biocidal alternatives to antifoulings and how they compare to the biocides in terms of performance”. Registration is already open and we look forward to your participation. All further information can be found here: LINK
Organizer: Die Akademie Fresenius GmbH

Furthermore, on February 6, you will have the opportunity to take part in the webinar “Antifouling” of the magazine FARBE UND LACK, also with Bernd Daehne as speaker. Topic (in German language): “Antifouling - basic knowledge in 120 minutes”. Registration is already open. All information can be found here: LINK

New: Tests with sea pipes according to ASTM D6990-20 (evaluation)

Dr Brill + Partner now also offers fouling tests in pipes. More and more applications require pipe systems through which natural seawater flows (cooling systems, LNG, hydrogen production, seawater heat pumps). However, biofouling can constrict the pipe cross-section, which reduces the flow and thus impairs the effect, leads to increased energy consumption and, in the worst case, even to system failure. Dr Brill und Partner has developed equipment for simulated field tests in Norderney harbour to test anti-fouling methods designed to prevent this. Here, simulated practical tests can be carried out under real-life conditions in pipelines with a defined seawater flow rate during the summer season from April to September. Analyses are carried out using endoscope cameras and test plates in accordance with ASTM D6990-20. During the test phase, customers are regularly informed about fouling development through inspections and the subsequent provision of photos and videos by email or cloud. Antifouling tests in the 2025 season

Preparations for the coming ‘open water’ season are already underway at our Institute for Antifouling and Biocorrosion. From April onwards, we will be happy to immerse your test panels in seawater or freshwater and analyse them for biofouling coverage. We evaluate the fouling using internationally recognised ASTM-methods for which our institute is exclusively DAkkS-accredited. For the classic static panel test in seawater, there are virtually unlimited places, but for other test methods the places are limited and, in some cases, already heavily booked. For the popular dynamic plate test on the test rig RotoMarin®, for example, only 7 out of 60 places are still available. If you are interested in outdoor testing in summer 2025, please contact our colleagues on Norderney in good time, who will send you blank panels for the application of your test products if necessary. The finished coated test panels should then be delivered to Norderney by the beginning of April at the latest. Of course, you are also welcome to come to Norderney during the summer to inspect the test panels in person and discuss the results.

Update of the market transparency study “Biofouling - solutions to combat biofouling on ship hulls”

Our Institute for Antifouling and Biocorrosion on Norderney will update the market transparency study “Biofouling - Solutions against biofouling on ship hulls” (Biofouling - Lösungsansätze gegen Biofouling an Schiffsrümpfen). In 2020, the Competence Center GreenShipping Niedersachsen, together with the Maritime Cluster Norddeutschland e.V. (MCN) and EurA AG, compiled this German-language market overview for the first time. It presents players who offer solutions to combat biofouling on ship hulls or who are conducting research in this area. Companies, universities and institutions can thus find suitable cooperation partners for various projects in the field of anti-fouling technologies and techniques more quickly and easily. The aim of the overview is to increase market transparency and to support research and development, thereby driving it forward in a faster and more targeted manner. Bernd Daehne (Director of Antifouling Research Station) and his team are now updating this overview.

Comparative evaluation of laboratory methods for performance assessment of cementitious materials in wastewater networks - New publication with Dr. Tilman Gehrke as co-author

Cement and Concrete Research has published a publication co-authored by Dr. Tilman Gehrke: "Comparative evaluation of laboratory methods for performance assessment of cementitious materials in wastewater networks: Biological and chemical tests versus field exposure". The study demonstrates that biological testing methods for assessing the durability of repair mortars in sewer systems provide more realistic and useful results than standardized chemical tests, as they better predict actual corrosion rates. All further information on this publication can be found here: LINK

New Publication: Investigating the resistome of haemolytic bacteria in Arctic soils

Environmental Microbiology Reports has published a study co-authored by several researchers from our institute. The paper, titled "Investigating the resistome of haemolytic bacteria in Arctic soils," examines antibiotic resistance in bacteria found in Arctic environments. We have also created a Visual Abstract that summarizes the key findings. Both the full publication and the Visual Abstract are available at the following link: HERE.

Key Message: Antimicrobial resistance in Arctic bacteria highlights the need for conservation, as novel resistance mechanisms may pose a threat if transferable between species or if they become widespread due to enviromental stress.

New COST action branded – Biofilm – the Regulatory Tool box

A new COST action started and Dr. Matthias Buhmann and Dr. Florian H. H. Brill are members of the Management Committee of this new COST action CA 23152 “RegulatoryToolBox”. The purpose of this 4-years network project is building consensus on Biofilm Regulatory Decision Making. This means that we would like to give guidance about methods, definitions etc. that can substantiate claims for products such as biocidal products or medical devices. In this very strong European-wide network under the lead of Professor Dr. Darla Georges who is affiliated at the University of Porto and the Center for Biofilm Engineering of the Montana State University is an extra-ordinary potential for success.

The kick-off meeting was on September 26th in Brussels. The COST action is closely related to our activities of the Biofilm Task Force within CEN TC 216 under the lead of Dr. Florian H. H. Brill.
